8 Secrets On How To Maintain Natural African Hair

You know how it feels when you cannot get a comb through your natural African hair? Arrgh! The pain, frustration, helpless can make you scream.
Tuko.co.ke has compiled eight easy steps to keep your natural hair shiny, silky and smooth.

1.Take vitamin supplements
Certain supplements, such as Omega-3 oil, fish egg phospholipids, and vitamin E, improve the shine and growth of African hair.

2.Soak your hair in oil at night
Coat your hair with olive oil or egg oil and wrap it in a shower cap and bandana before you go to bed at night. Massage the oil into the roots of your hair all the way to the ends. Rinse out with shampoo in the morning. This keeps African hair soft and makes it easy to comb.

3.Massage organic unrefined coconut oil through your dry hair
The coconut oil must be unrefined; otherwise it won’t soak into your hair, as it should. The main goal is to condition the ends. Apply coconut oil starting from the ends, then up. The effect is awesome!

4.Condition your hair after you shampoo it to increase softness
Use a deep conditioner or conditioning treatment twice a week for soft, shiny, strong hair.

5.Avoid dyes
The pre-treatment (usually with ammonia) makes the hair strand weak and the follicles damaged. Repeatedly using hair colors will make your hair dry, dull and lifeless. Even if you think your African hair is hard, chemical dyes will make you highly regret!

6.Stay away from heat products
Use heat protector. If you can, as much as possible avoid blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons. They will burn your hair and create split ends. Let your hair air dry after you wash it. If you must use a blower, use it without heat.

7.Correct hair products
Buy the correct hair shampoo and conditioner. Go for mild shampoos, low in sulphate and salt that you can use during your main wash. The key is to look for specialized products for your specific hair type.

8. Drink a lot of water!
